Achieving climate neutrality requires deep decarbonization across all sectors of the economy. While direct electrification will play a central role, it reaches its limits in so-called hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy industry, aviation, and shipping. In these areas, hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels are widely seen as key building blocks of a net-zero energy system. At the same time, their role remains contested due to high costs, limited availability, and significant system-wide trade-offs.
Recent research highlights both the promise and the constraints of hydrogen: while it can enable substantial emissions reductions in selected applications, scaling up production requires vast amounts of renewable energy, infrastructure, and investment, and may only deliver part of the needed mitigation potential.
This webinar brings together perspectives from research, industry, and policy to discuss a central question: what role should hydrogen realistically play in the energy transition? Experts will explore evidence from recent studies, insights from emerging projects, and implications for energy system design, focusing on where hydrogen adds value and where alternative solutions may be more efficient.
This GEE Energy@Lunch event is being organized in collaboration with the SAEE (Swiss Association for Energy Economics).
The webinar will be conducted in English.
